A Parent’s Guide to Handling Dental Emergencies on Vacation (Without the Stress)
Spring Break is here, and that means sunshine, travel, late bedtimes, sweet treats, and lots of family fun. Whether you’re heading to the beach, the mountains, or just enjoying a staycation, it’s a time to relax and make memories.
But let’s be honest… kids will be kids. And sometimes, that includes unexpected bumps, falls, or “uh-oh” moments involving their teeth.
First Things First: Don’t Panic
If something happens while you’re on vacation, take a breath. Most dental emergencies can be managed calmly with the right steps until you’re able to get care.
Common Dental Emergencies (Tap to Expand)
Knocked-Out Tooth (Permanent Tooth Only)
What to do IMMEDIATELY:
Pick up the tooth by the top (not the root)
Gently rinse if dirty (no scrubbing)
Try to place it back in the socket
If that’s not possible, store it in milk or saliva
Get to a dentist as quickly as possible
Timing matters:The sooner you act, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
Toothache or Sensitivity
What to do:
Rinse with warm saltwater
Gently floss around the area
Avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods
Use a child-safe pain reliever if needed
Watch for:Swelling, fever, or persistent pain — these need attention sooner rather than later.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
What to do:
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water
Save any pieces if you can find them
Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
Avoid hard or crunchy foods
Call a dentist for next steps
Good to know: Not all chips are urgent, but it’s always best to have it evaluated.

Travel Smart: Quick Dental Kit for Your Trip
Before you head out, throw these in your bag:
Toothbrush & toothpaste
Floss
Small container with a lid (for a tooth, just in case)
Gauze
Children’s pain reliever (as recommended by your pediatrician)
It takes two minutes to pack — and can save a lot of stress later.
When You Get Back
Even if everything seems “fine,” it’s always a good idea to have your child’s smile checked after an injury. Small issues can sometimes hide beneath the surface.
